• Osborne auto party charged by moose — Mr. and Mrs. George S. Osborne of Limestone and Mr. and Mrs. Frank O. Osborne of Fort Fairfield, who were returning from Waterville by automobile, were attacked by an infuriated bull moose in a thick stretch of woods near Danforth. It was only by opening up the level and turning on all his power suddenly that Mr. Osborne managed to avoid the on-rushing forest giant.
• Soothing summer solutions — Gammon’s Drug Store advertises the following products for relief of summer ailments: talcum powder to soothe and cool; peroxide to clean cuts, scratches and skin abrasions; and witch hazel to promote vigor, strength and bodily health.

• Houlton Battery B leaves for war games — With full equipment of six trucks, two station wagons, four 75 millimeter guns, one trailer and instruments, 65 men of Battalion B of the Maine National Guard will leave here Sunday for their annual encampment at Plattsburg, N.Y. where they will be part of the largest peacetime concentration of troops this country has known.

• Bouchard wins sewing contest — Miss Elaine Bouchard of Caribou, a 16-year-old, was the winner of the girls’ division in the Aroostook County “Sew-It-From-Wool” contest conducted in the Presque Isle Extension office. Elaine made a soft blue novelty flecked wool suit with a straight line skirt and cape.
• Ribbon cutting at VFW picnic site — The Lister-Knowlton VFW Post and Auxiliary held a ribbon cutting ceremony at the opening of its new picnic area on the Van Buren Road. Mrs. Philip Walton, wife of the immediate past commander, assisted by William Castonguay who gave the land, cut the ribbon on the picnic area which has been named “The Ponderosa.”

• Caribou phone workers join strike — Sixty County telephone workers have joined the nationwide strike against four telephone companies including the NYNEX Corp. serving the state of New York and all of New England. All union workers in Aroostook County have walked off the job including 34 in Presque Isle, 11 in Houlton and nine in Caribou.
• Interest rates top 8 percent — Two local banks advertised interest returns above 8 percent this week: Casco Northern Bank’s Passbook Fifty Plus features an annual rate of 8.16 percent while Peoples Heritage Bank quotes an 8.60 annual rate on their six-month certificate of deposit.
