This year’s summer program at the Caribou Library was “fizz, boom, read,” according to children’s librarian Jean Shaw.
“The children did kitchen science experiments. They experimented with the five senses, and they learned about the outdoors and wetlands,” said Shaw.
This led to a field trip to Collins Pond, which both the Wednesday and Thursday grade 1-4 groups visited on their respective library days. The children walked to the pond from the library — with both the Wednesday and Thursday classes leaving the children’s library holding on to a long rope, in order to make sure everyone stayed together in a single-file line and everyone crossed the busy streets safely, swiftly and together.
Both groups searched around the pond, and found a number of interesting examples of nature, including spider webs, seed pods, cattails, a hornet’s nest and a variety of different blossoms, leaves, insects and birdhouses. One young student even found a four-leaf clover.
“Much fun was had by all,” said Shaw.
