STOCKHOLM – Michael G. Sandstrom, 71, died September 4, 2014, at his Stockholm residence with his family at his side. Mike was born in Edmunston, New Brunswick on April 9, 1943, the son of Adelaide (Lavoie) Sandstrom Klein and Gunner Sandstrom.
Michael lived a busy life growing up at Long Lake with his parents and sister then in his later years living in Stockholm. Michael was a 1961 graduate of Ricker Classical Institute in Houlton. On May 8, 1965 Michael married Anne Marie Bossie.
Michael’s work life, which was always a passion, started with a technical education from Southern Maine Vocational School leading to a career in electrical construction that took him to every pulp and paper mill throughout the state of Maine and much of New England, working with a variety of contractors. Mike also spent several years working at his singular passion which was farming. He farmed several properties around the Stockholm and New Sweden areas with the help of his wife and children. Working with Anne and the kids were some of the happiest times Mike lived.
Mike always had strong commitment and a civic mindedness that led to his commitment and involvement in many organizations including the Catholic Order of Foresters, St. Theresa’s Church Council, God’s Country and Nordic Lakers Snowmobile Clubs, Club Twenty. Mike also served as an advisor for the NMCC Electrical Construction Advisory Board, the ABC Bargaining Council, Regional Planning Commission and the Maine Potato Board. After Michael retired he was able to pursue his final passion, which was all about the only place Mike’s heart has really ever been: Stockholm, Maine. Mike was an active member of the Stockholm School Board and Stockholm’s Board of Selectmen. In his last years, Mike was very active in town politics and the preservation of the places and buildings that make Stockholm special to those who have had the gift of living here, including the reuse of the Stockholm School, the repair of the Stockholm Fire tower, the on-going maintenance and care of the Stockholm Catholic Church, both the Catholic Cemeteries with special efforts to fix the old cemetery to respect those that are laid to rest and, of course, the care and repair of Knockout which is a most special place to a large group of Stockholm’s hunting friends.
Michael loved his wife, children, grandchildren as well as his extended family and especially his friends and home – Stockholm.
Michael is survived by his loving wife, Anne Marie (Bossie) Sandstrom of Stockholm; and children, Timothy Sandstrom and partner Claudia Springer of Stockholm with children Caleb Sandstrom Ritts of AZ, Jade Anderson, Brady Anderson and grandson Mason, all of Stockholm, Tamara Sandstrom Cote and husband, Jeffery and their children, Lindsey Cote Theriault and husband Tyler and Courtney Cote, all of Stockholm, Jennifer Sandstrom and partner Timothy Marcinak of Wilmington, NC, and Jessica Sandstrom Richardson and husband Michael and their children, Cody Douglass, Cali Richardson, Kayla Richardson and Melissa Richardson, all of Turner.
