1914: Police Chief Noiles rounds up professional pickpockets

115 Years Ago-Sept. 14, 1899

• With the issue of Sept. 7, after continuous service of twelve years and three months as editor and proprietor, A. W. Hall sold The Republican to Mrs. Florence C. Porter and Oscar P. Leonard. Mrs. Porter will occupy the editor’s chair and Mr. Leonard will have charge of the mechanical department and act as local reporter.

 

100 Years Ago-Sept. 10, 1914

• Unpleasant potato situation — The potato situation in Aroostook is not very pleasant to either the farmers or the buyers at present, as the price dropped last week to $1 a barrel on account of the oversupply coming into Boston from nearby points.
• Of local interest — An alarm of fire was rung in Saturday forenoon last, discovered on the roof of H. E. Jones starch factory and was extinguished by a ready fire hose. Chief of Police Noiles rounded up several professional pickpockets this week and they were placed in the town’s “cooler.”

75 Years Ago-Sept. 14, 1939

• Caribou is grocery distribution center — Few people are aware that Caribou is the distribution point for bulky, heavy goods to A & P food stores all over Aroostook, Patten to Fort Kent, for a total of sixteen stores.
• Citizens naturalized at Caribou court — Of the 39 persons naturalized at the present term of the Superior Court being held in Caribou, the following were among those from the local area: Caribou: John R. MacGorman, Mary M. Hanley, Herbert J. Hanley, Neil N. McKinnon Jr., Walter J. Murphy and Lester C. Milton; also Reginald G. Clark of New Sweden and Earl Corey of Wade.

• Food buys at local IGAs — The following grocery specials were offered at Caribou’s three local IGA grocery stores (By-Lo, Golding’s and Mike’s Myty) this week: whole chickens, 28 cents/lb.; IGA brand butter, 69 cents/lb. and sugar, 5 lbs. for 57 cents.
• DeMerchant/Kelley wedding celebrated — Miss Carolyn Elaine DeMerchant, daughter of Mrs. Helen DeMerchant of Fort Fairfield and the late Donald DeMerchant, became the bride of Harvey Allan Kelley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph J. Kelley of Caribou, Aug. 28, at Bethel Baptist Church in Fort Fairfield.

25 Years Ago-Sept. 13, 1989

• Thunderbirds perform at Loring — The United States Air Force’s aerial demonstration team, the Thunderbirds, will perform today during Loring Air Force Base’s Airshow ’89. Also featured will be other aerial demonstrations, parachute jumps, a Security Police canine demonstration, aircraft displays and a Thunderbird autograph session at 3 p.m.
• Tim Sample at CPAC — The St. Thomas School Artist Retreat in association with the Temporary Shelter for the Homeless present Maine humorist Tim Sample in concert on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Hobby Shop & One Stop, Caribou; Hedrich’s Mkt., Fort Fairfield; Washburn Grocery Store and Music Shop, Presque Isle; $10 each with special benefit tickets for $25.
