• On account of increasing business, Miss Evelyn Fisher has been obliged to have a new workroom added to her store on Sweden Street.
• Augustus Dow lost his farm, buildings, and all his crops and stock by fire last Saturday.
100 Years Ago-Sept. 17, 1914
• In the classifieds — Wanted: party to clean up land which has been burned over, Howard Nichols, Limestone; For Sale: wagon and harness at a bargain, apply at Gammon’s Drug Store; Help Wanted, for a few weeks, young girl in reception room to wait upon customers, G. L. Dee, photographer.
• Washburn blaze draws hundreds — About eight o’clock Sunday night the fire alarm sounded, help having been summoned from Washburn for a bad blaze which had started in that town. Hundred of people went over by automobile and rendered what assistance they could. Two buildings burned were: Lee H. Ballards, in which Seates & Co. had a drug store, and the post office building.
75 Years Ago-Sept. 21, 1939
• School days supplies — The Aroostook Republican office has the following school supplies in stock and for sale: fountain pens, 25 cents; pencils, two for 5 cents; notebooks, 10 cents and up; Carter’s ink, all shades, 10 cents and paste and mucilage, 10 cents and up.
• Of local interest — Five Swedish men from Rockland are employed here in Westmanland for the potato picking season. Mrs. Burton L. Beveridge of Perham was the winner of a studio couch given away by Wight’s Furniture Co. at the Northern Maine Fair. Miss Louise Findlen of Fort Fairfield is employed by Maine Potato Bag Co. Miss Chavala Savage expects to return to Caribou and resume her musical classes on Oct. 2.
50 Years Ago-Sept. 17, 1964
• College-bound from Class of 1964 — Bertis Pratt, Caribou High School guidance director, reports four more students from the Class of 1964 have left to attend advanced schools for education. They are: Diane Levesque, to Northwest Institute in Minneapolis; Brenda Brewer to Joliet Beauty Culture School in Joliet, Ill.; Betty Sirois to Northeastern Business College in Portland and Gloria Hitchcock to the Maine School of Practical Nursing in Presque Isle.
• Limestone’s Butler candidate for FFA award — A Maine Future Farmer, James Butler of Limestone, is one of 12 candidates for a regional FFA Star State Farmer award to be presented Sept. 19 in Springfield, Mass., during the Governors’ Night Program at the opening of the 1964 Eastern States Exposition.

• Ducks Unlimited banquet in Caribou — The Aroostook Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will be holding its annual banquet and auction on Sept. 29 at the VFW hall in Caribou. According to Bill Graves, president of the organization for the past seven years, the event promises something for everyone. Ed Keenan will serve as auctioneer.
• Collins promoted in lumber firm — Donald F. Collins, president of S. W. Collins Co. in Caribou, announced today the appointment of D. Gregg Collins as vice president and store manager. Sam Collins will continue as treasurer and general manager of the family-owned lumber and building material firm which is celebrating its 145th year of operation in Caribou and Aroostook County.
