1899: Teague offers 30 rods square to create park

115 Years Ago-Nov. 16, 1899

• Teague Park: About five years ago, J.D. Teague anticipated growth that Caribou is destined to see, laid out a street intersecting with Main street on the west and connecting on the east with that which runs parallel with the Aroostook River. This opened up a number of desirable house lots. He then gave to the town a lot of land thirty rods square for a public park.

 100 Years Ago-Nov. 12, 1914

• Selander farm for sale — Farm of 110 acres, 30 acres cleared; the rest in mixed growth with wood and lumber. Chance for a young man to make good and to make a good sized farm. Land in excellent condition and free from weeds. – Willie L. Selander, New Sweden Station.
• War relief potatoes — The regular monthly meeting of the Caribou Board of Trade was held in Odd Fellow’s hall Friday night. Chief topic for discussion was the movement inaugurated a few days ago for the county of Aroostook to send a trainload of potatoes to the stricken Belgians in relief for the destitute condition of that war-devastated country.

75 Years Ago-Nov. 16, 1939

• Staying warm this winter — In their advertisements, local mercants offer these “stay warm” products in time for winter. At J. C. Penney Co., men’s cowhide leather work mittens 49 cents; boys sheepskin coats $2 each, and men’s wool mufflers, 98 cents. At M. N. Landau 5 Cent to $1 Stores, men’s union suits: fleece lined, 98 cents; 10 percent wool, 89 cents and 25 percent wool, $1.79.
• C. J. Soderberg: Death of prominent man — The community was shocked and saddened when news came of the sudden passing of C. J. Soderberg. Mr. Soderberg was born July 1, 1872 in Sundsvall, Sweden, and when a young man emigrated to New Sweden. He would often recall the many hardships and tribulations when the town was still not used to the ring of the home-seeker’s axe.

50 Years Ago-Nov. 12, 1964

• Limestone students in music festival — The All-Aroostook Music Festival was held last Saturday at Fort Fairfield High School, with 140 band members representing 10 high schools. Representing Limestone were: Dorothy Taylor, flute; Robert Doe, Jean Connon and John Leppert, clarinet; Thomas Leblond, trumpet; Roger Hambridge, coronet; and Lyle Taylor, baritone saxophone.
• Sundays on WAGM — The television lineup for Sunday afternoon on Channel 8, WAGM is: 12:00 Big Picture, 12:30 Breakthrough, Football starting at 1:30 p.m.; 6:30 Hazel; 7:00 Lassie; 7:30 My Favorite Martian; 8:00 The Ed Sullivan Show; 9:00 Bonanza; 10:00 The Fugitive and 11:00 p.m. News.

25 Years Ago-Nov. 15, 1989

• Hunter’s breakfast supports Cross Lake — Members of Sportsmen Inc. served 862 people at their annual Hunter’s Breakfast on Veterans Day at the lodge in Axel Siding. Prize winners were Frank Pike of Caribou, who won the 30.06 rifle; Pete Johnson of Madawaska Lake, 12-gauge shotgun; Phil Tomlinson of New Sweden, a lantern and Walter Ireland, a sleeping bag. Proceeds benefit the maintenance of Cross Lake landing and other club projects.
• Thibodeau completes Australian internship — Bruce Thibodeau of Caribou recently returned from Australia, completing a 14-week project for the Australian Broadcasting Corp. under the supervision of Babson College’s International Management Internship Program.
