1915: Local farmers to receive ice from Haynes’ Bordeaux

100 Years Ago-Jan. 14, 1915

• Grange supper — At the grange Saturday evening an early supper was served to about one hundred in number, after which the officers for the new year were installed by Fred Spear, assisted by Forest Mason. Music was furnished by Beanett’s orchestra, assisted by Laura Noyes and Warren Noyes. A good time was enjoyed by all present.
• Frozen commodity — Gould Crouse [of Crouseville] is cutting ice at Haynes’ Bordeaux and he will supply the farmers with all the ice they need in Crouseville, Cross Road, Mapleton, Washburn, Presque Isle or Caribou.

75 Years Ago-Jan. 11, 1940

• Legion recognized — The Henry B. Pratt Jr. Post No. 15 of Caribou was notified recently of a “citation for most distinguished service” from Frank E. Samuel, national adjutant of the American Legion, for their outstanding membership record achievement this year.
• Musical revue — The annual music night of the Caribou BPW was observed at their club rooms, centered on the music of Ireland. The program included the duet “The Vales of Sweet Kildare” by Mrs. Egon Espling and Mrs. S.W. Collins and the vocal solo “I’m Falling in Love with Someone” by Miss Lorayne Harmon.

50 Years Ago-Jan. 14, 1965

• Parking changes needed — The Municipal Parking Committee has made sweeping recommendations to the Town Council with the general aim of providing more adequate parking facilities, both metered and free. The committee has recommended acquisition of property on Washburn Ave. and part of the old Grant estate on West Sweden St.
• Anniversary marked — The 75th annual meeting of the Aroostook Trust Company was held at Hotel Caribou and officers were elected, including S.W. Collins, president and board chairman; Ralph W. Allen, vice president; Theodore B. Tornquist, treasurer; and Dwight D. Sinclair, Roy A. Barton Jr. and Wallace I. Getchell Jr., assistant treasurers.

25 Years Ago-Jan. 10, 1990

• Now serving veterans — The Maine Veterans’ Home, the second in the state, was officially opened [Jan. 6], marking a decade of intense effort to bring long-term health care to County vets. Hundreds of citizens crowded into the sparkling new facility for grand opening ceremonies, joined by Gov. John R. McKernan, Rep. Olympia Snowe, House Speaker John Martin and other state and local officials.
• Spreading cheer — Among holiday happenings reported was Caribou High School’s recent Christmas assembly, organized by Principal Jim Ugone and several faculty members, which instilled the true spirit of the season. Thanks to faculty, students, classes, clubs, citizens and businesses, each student received a gift.
