To the editor:
Caribou has recently been celebrating the “Good News” that Sitel is moving from the Loring Commerce Centre (LCC) to the town of Caribou and creating 330 jobs in downtown Caribou. Well it is not “Good News” for the LCC as rent revenue will be lost and it is not good for the town of Limestone whose tax rate will increase by about a half mil. Not good news at all!
When the Loring Development Authority (LDA) started up, the LDA had to promise not to solicit business from the surrounding impacted communities. Apparently, that promise is not respected in reverse.
To make matters worse, Governor LePage declined to re-nominate Limestone’s delegates to the LDA and instead appointed someone outside the impacted communities. Limestone has always had two delegates on the LDA board. Now the Caribou area has three delegates and Limestone has zero despite the fact that the LCC is located almost entirely in Limestone. Limestone citizens and the Board of Selectpeople should be outraged and contacting the Governor, insisting that the town be represented.
Instead of shouting “Good News,” the town of Caribou should be apologizing to the LDA and Limestone. “Good News” would be a new business brought into Aroostook County not one pirated from a neighboring town.
