Cross Lake & Caribou – Wayne R. Nichols, 77, died February 15, 2015, at Caribou. He was born in Presque isle, July 28, 1937, the son of Lawrence and Glenice (McNaughton) Nichols.
Wayne was a 1955 graduate of Presque Isle High School and served as state president of Future Farmers of America. He served with the US Army and was a member of the Perkins Plourde Post 136 American Legion. Following his discharge from the military, Wayne was employed as a potato inspector and then for over 27 years he was employed as a burner technician for Dead River Company. Mr. Nichols was a very active lifetime member and past Master of Caribou Lodge #170 A.F. & A.M., a member of Fort Kent Lodge #209, The Anah Temple Shrine, The Aroostook Shrine Club as well as being a 32nd Degree member of the Scottish Rite. Wayne loved spending time with family and friends at his Cross Lake home and served as president of the Matrimony Point Road Association. He was a member of the Gray Memorial United Methodist Church. Wayne had many loves in his life including gardening, camping, telling a good story, animals and his grandchildren. He was a real ladies man, a sharp dresser and loved to sing and dance. Surviving in addition to his wife Deborah “McGary” Nichols of Cross Lake and his mother Glenice of Easton are his children; DeDe Nichols and John Nichols both of Utah, Rodney Nichols of Caribou and Stephen Chike of Presque Isle; two brothers, Lawrence Nichols of Falmouth and Kevin Nichols of Easton; one sister Peggy Mitchell of Old Orchard Beach; his Aunt, Avis Hume of Easton, nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Mr. Nichols was predeceased by his father, and two wives Dorre (Delaney) Nichols and Colleen “Cookie” (Kelley) Nichols.
Friends visited with the family 12 noon until 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 21, 2015, at the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir Street, Caribou. Masonic memorial services were conducted at 12 noon by the officers and members of Caribou Lodge. Members of the Perkins Plourde Post also conducted services at 1:00 p.m. A gathering of family and friends will be held later this summer at Cross Lake.
