• During the past week 63 carloads of freight, 23 of which were potatoes, were shipped west from this station over the B. & A., and this was one of the poorest weeks of the season.
• The snow is attaining such a depth that reports of smash-ups on the country roads are by no means infrequent.
100 Years Ago-Feb. 25, 1915
New Sweden mill — John Ringdahl started up his new mill last week and is prepared to saw what lumber is hauled now. No doubt this enterprise will be greatly appreciated by the public.
Anniversary party — A reception was given to Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Mahoney at their home in Woodland. The presents were pretty and useful, consisting of an oak dining set, silverware, cut glass, carving sets, fancy plates, and other things too numerous to mention. Their many friends wish them a happy and prosperous life.
75 Years Ago-Feb. 22, 1940
At the Carnival — Miss Gertrude Garcelon was crowned Queen of the Caribou Winter Carnival in an unusually beautiful and impressive ceremony, with Miss Margaret Wright and Miss Henrietta Wright as attendants. Additionally, 250 attended the annual Aroostook Sportsmen’s Banquet, with prominent guests including Gov. Lewis O. Barrows and commanding officers of the various American Legion posts in the County.
Valentine gathering — The Hardison School (McGraw Siding) pupils enjoyed a Valentine box Wednesday afternoon, with appropriate games and songs. Beryl Somers was postmistress, with Betty Huston, Roger Chandler, Marilyn Somers and Robert Clark as mail carriers.
50 Years Ago-Feb. 25, 1965
Icy celebration — A Stockholm skating party was planned by the Junior Luther League when the group held a supper meeting at the church following a skiing party. Gary Sodergren presided at the meeting with prayer by Rev. Eugene Mitchell.
Photographer awarded — Mrs. Wilda Hutcheon was the winner of all three prizes in the black and white pictorial class in the Maine Professional Photographers competition held in Portland, and also won a color prize. She displayed and talked about her work during a meeting of the Woman’s Literary Club held at her home.
25 Years Ago-Feb. 21, 1990
Playground funds — The city of Caribou received a $31,250 grant to create a playground in Teague Park near Teague Park Elementary School, Gov. John R. McKernan announced. Caribou won one of seven grants supporting community recreation projects presented by the Federal Land and Water Conservation Fund.
Good cause — Northern Maine snowmobile clubs raised over $5,500 for the Pine Tree Camp for Handicapped Children and Adults at its first benefit Pine Tree Ride-in at Spruce Haven, hosted by the Spruce Haven Snowmobile Club. Despite minus-18-degree weather a large number of snowmobilers and friends attended the event.
