CARIBOU, Maine — Renovations to the Burger Boy restaurant in Caribou are complete. Owner Spenser Ouellette says this may lead to Burger Boy staying open year-round.
“Burger Boy was in need of a facelift. Built in 1968 the exterior of the building hasn’t been touched since,” Ouellette said.
Construction on new outer walls began last December. The restaurant is now insulated and has a metal exterior.
“It looks good. We still kept that 1950s-‘60s retro look to it with the black and white checkers underneath the canopy. And the steel beams we encased with diamond plate,” Ouellette said.
The drive thru torn down and rebuilt, it now sits on a solid cement pad. And a drive thru menu is installed around back.
“The drive thru was just sitting on cinder blocks and in the springtime it would go up and down with the frost heaves. We tore that down last fall,” Ouellette said.
Ouellette installed new digital menu boards last year and bought new point of sale cash registers to help efficiency.
“The renovations needed to be done no matter what. But it gives me the opportunity, if I want, to open year-round. It was insulated before, but not enough to keep it warm in the winter,” Ouellette said.
Ouellette bought Burger Boy in December of 2012. “Burger Boy is unique to Caribou, it’s been around since the ‘60s and I love it. I’m glad I made that decision,” Ouellette said.
Ouellette kept the renovations local. He used contractors from Caribou and says investing in Burger Boy as well as other local businesses helps the community.
Burger Boy is now open for the season.
