CARIBOU & PRESQUE ISLE – Gladys G. Kelley Whittier, 92, beloved wife of the late Raymond Whittier, died Thursday, March 5, 2015, at a Caribou health care facility. She was born March 2, 1923, at Fort Fairfield, the daughter of Thomas F. and Myrtle (Curran) Kelley.
She was a parishioner of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Caribou. Gladys and Raymond were married on May 8, 1943, where they began their life on the farm located on the Old Washburn Road. She had many interests including writing short stories and poems, gardening, working at the Caribou Historical Society, cooking and baking.
In the summer, she enjoyed fishing and camping with family and friends, and always loved dancing with Raymond. Throughout her life she was a wonderful companion, mother and care giver.
She is survived by her four daughters and their husbands, Joanne and Richard Bossie of Caribou, Susan and James Foreman of Daniel Island, SC, Ellen and Charles Heavner of Aiken, SC, and Janet and Allen Music of China, ME; a son, Roy Whittier and his wife, Debbie, of Presque Isle; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews including a special niece, Elaine Gross and her husband, Earl, in Morehead City, NC.
She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond, of 69 years in January 2013; and a great-granddaughter, Lucy Bland.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Parish of the Precious Blood, with Rev. Kyle Doustou officiating. Friends called 9:30 – 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, at Lancaster Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover Street, Caribou. Spring interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Caribou.
