CARIBOU, Maine — The “Babies and Books” program was started in 2000 by previous Children’s Librarian Jean Shaw, Friends of Caribou Public Library and Cary Medical Center.

This program is for children birth to age one. We are promoting early literacy by giving your child a head start with books. Maya Angelou said that “Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his needs, is good for him or her.”
When babies are born at Cary Medical Center, there is a letter in their gift bag from the library. Attached is a card that invites you and your child to visit the Caribou Public Library. Upon your first visit your child will receive his/her own library card, a board book and activity packets. Children are also invited to attend year round programming.
