WOODLAND – Matthew H. Williams, 71, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, March 16, 2015, at his home in Woodland. He was born on April 3, 1943, in Caribou, the son of Matthew and Helen (Hemberg) Williams.
Matt worked for the Dead River Company for over 20 years before starting his own business, Williams Heating. For over 30 years, he loved serving his customers and created many lasting friendships.
He collected Lionel and H.O. trains and had a large display which he enjoyed. He loved the land and loved his tractors, Massey Ferguson’s, being his favorite. He had some of the fastest speed boats Madawaska Lake has ever seen; Moby Dick and the Godfather III were a force to be reckoned with.
When he wasn’t on the lake, he spent many hours on the ATV trails kicking up the dust on the four wheeler. In the winter, he loved snowmobiling with family and friends, fixing and dragging trails, one of which, “Matt’s Trail” was named after him and is home of the famous handmade, “Covered Bridge”.
He loved helping people in need, whether plowing their yards or simply lending a hand. He was at his happiest surrounded by friends and family at any get together. He also enjoyed traveling to his home in Florida, where he will be missed by many dear friends from around the world.
He is a past member of the Lions Club, Snowmobile Club and ATV Club of Caribou. Matt also proudly served his country in the National Guard for eight years.
Matt is survived by his wife of 51 years, Patti (Sirois) Williams; his nephew, Seth and Karlyn Williams and their daughter, Delaney, of Caribou; his niece, Kristen and Ron Hanson and their daughters, Erica and Emily, of Scarborough; his mother-in-law, Mary Sirois of New Sweden; his sisters- and brothers-in-law, Kathy Williams of Woodland, Warren Sirois of Presque Isle, Wanda Kane of Old Orchard Beach, Robert (Bob) Sirois of Sanford, and Gloria and Patrick Ouillette of Camden. He will be missed by many more nieces and nephews and also his special cat, Poykin.
In addition to his parents, Matt was predeceased by his brother, Jim Williams; and a special aunt, Edna.
Friends and family called on Thursday, March 19, 2015, from 6-8 p.m., at Lancaster Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover St., Caribou, where a funeral service was held at 10 a.m., on Friday, March 20. A reception followed the service at the Woodland Baptist Church. Donations in Matt’s memory may be made to the Jefferson Cary Foundation, 163 Van Buren Rd., Caribou, ME 04736.
