It has been quite a winter for several local Maine Winter Sports Center skiers. The competitive season wrapped up March 20-22 with the NENSA Eastern High School Championships held at Black Mountain in Rumford
Lance McKenney of Fort Fairfield came in first place out of 114 skiers in the men’s 7.5-kilometer classical event. His time was 18 minutes and 40.4 seconds, which was nearly 18 seconds faster than fellow Maine skier Daniel Streinz of Hersey.
Brendan Cyr of Caribou took 26th place in 20:02.5 and Jason Bartley of Presque Isle was 58th in 21:15.3.
In the 1.2-kilometer freestyle sprint, McKenney placed seventh overall out of a field of 113. McKenney’s time was 2 minutes and 23.58 seconds.
Cyr came in 12th place in 2:25.12, while Bartley was 25th in 2:28.25.
McKenney was eighth in the 5K free technique race with a time of 12:24.4. Cyr came in 24th in 12:51.5 and Bartley was 28th in 12:54.9.
In the 4 X 3-kilometer mixed medley relay, the Maine team made up of McKenney, Daniel Streinz, Kaelyn Woods and Hadley Moreau took fifth place out of 53 teams. Their combined time was 32:23.6.
Cyr was part of another team from the state which fared well, taking 11th place. Cyr joined Caleb Clarke, Lily Johnston and Fiona Ahearne to compile a time of 33:23.1.
Bartley competed along with Andrew Siegel, Grace Cowles and Leela Hornbach and they came in at 34:24.1, good for 27th overall.
Sarah Beaulieu of Fort Fairfield also competed and her team placed 41st in 36:45.9.
Beaulieu finished the 1.2K freestyle sprint in 3:13.27, good for the 79th position, while on the 5K freestyle course, she turned in a time of 17:28.5, which was 85th overall.
At the USSA Junior Nationals in Truckee, Calif. March 14, teams from the 10 regions of the United States competed in a 3 X 3-kilometer relay competition. McKenney was a member of the third-place team for U18 men.
That same weekend in Fort Kent, the U16 New England Championships took place, with Beaulieu and Max Bartley of Presque Isle competing on the Maine team which fashioned a second-place overall finish.
