It has been an incredibly busy spring here at the Caribou Area Chamber of Commerce. That is a good thing! Once again, nearly 100 families and organizations have signed up for the City-Wide Yard Sale taking place May 16 and 17 (with many starting on Friday the 15). Folks from Quebec to Millinocket have been requesting maps sent because they plan on being here.
The roads will be very busy around town so please drive carefully. Those focused on what is on someone’s lawn may not focus on cars coming down the road! Be alert!
The maps — graciously sponsored by Katahdin Trust Company — are everywhere around Caribou. They are at the banks, the grocery stores, the convenience stores and a few other places. You can also find it on our website under Popular Forms. You will need 11- by 17-inch paper to print it.
I tried to accommodate those not in the urban compact with another map showing the whole town. I did not have much room, so it is small and you might need a magnifying glass, but it is better than not being on the map at all!

Memorial Day is also coming right up the very next weekend. If you want to sign up to march in the Memorial Day Parade, the forms are at the office and also on the website under Popular Forms. Let’s honor those who sacrificed for our way of life!
At 1 p.m. on Memorial Day, there is the annual ceremony at the Northern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery. That is always a very moving event that Harry Hafford and his volunteers put together and I would encourage you to attend to again honor our brave heroes.
The Caribou Country Club is open for business, which is always welcomed news to me! I played my first round this past Saturday and it was so good to get out. The course, for being this early, is in great shape with the greens much improved over the harshness of last year. Membership at the country club is up significantly, so come join us. It may be called a “country club” but there are no snobs there and it’s a fun and family oriented place with a strong core of dedicated volunteers.
Speaking of spring, Burger Boy and Houlton Farms Dairy are both open. Burger Boy went through some fantastic renovations over the winter and the place looks great. And the lines are already long over at Houlton Farms.
Lehrle Kieffer of ReMax Central mentioned to me that the housing market is fast and furious, which is great news for our area. I have gotten several requests from people who are moving here for information. We do live in a desirable place, folks.
And if that all is not enough, Thursdays on Sweden returns June 4 with a bang. I’ll give you more details on that next week.
The Chamber office will be closed this week on Wednesday and Thursday as I will be at a chamber directors’ conference down in Augusta. If you cannot find a yard sale map, I’ll leave a bunch of extras at the Katahdin Trust Company office over on Bennett Drive while I am away.
