The softball game of the week in Aroostook County will be played Thursday at 3 p.m. in Limestone. The No. 1-ranked Washburn Beavers, with their 8-1 record, will take on the No. 2 Limestone-MSSM Eagles, also at 8-1.
The team’s first meeting was May 11 in Washburn, with the Eagles earning an 8-4 win.
The Beavers are coming off a successful week with consecutive wins over East Grand/GHCA (5-4) last Tuesday, a 10-9 victory over Fort Fairfield Thursday and a 23-13 trouncing of Wisdom Monday.
The Eagles won four in a row during a busy stretch which began with a 7-0 shutout over Fort Fairfield last Wednesday. Coach Jamie Albert’s team also beat Wisdom Friday, 15-2; Southern Aroostook Saturday, 28-4; and Hodgdon Monday, 23-3.
In Class B, the Caribou girls were beaten at Ellsworth Saturday by scores of 17-2 and 12-1. The Vikings are 3-7 and in 16th place. Caribou hosts Houlton today and next hosts Presque Isle Tuesday, May 26.
In baseball action Monday, Fort Fairfield fell to Ashland, 6-2, but the Tigers crushed Limestone-MSSM last Wednesday, 23-3, behind the pitching of freshman Jared Harvey and a 13-hit attack paced by Dalton Cassidy and Carter Bruce.
Fort Fairfield, at 5-3 and in eighth place in EM Class D, faces a major test Thursday by making the trip to Dyer Brook to meet up against the No. 1 Southern Aroostook Warriors, who currently sport an 8-1 mark.
Washburn also stands at 5-3 and is one position higher than the Tigers in seventh. The Beavers bested Wisdom Monday, 14-5. They also had beaten East Grand/GHCA in Houlton last Wednesday, 11-4.
The Caribou boys suffered a setback in their bid for the post-season after losing a pair in Ellsworth despite giving up a total of four runs in the doubleheader. The Vikes wasted a strong pitching performance by Gunnar Bondeson in the 2-1 defeat in game one. Justin Ouellette surrendered single runs in the first two innings of game two and threw shutout baseball the rest of the way, but his Caribou squad fell, 2-0.
The Vikings were able to generate very little offense, with six hits in the first game and only two in the second. Noah Frost and Mason Huck had a hit in each contest for the visitors, who fell to 4-6 and are currently in 16th place out of 19 teams, with only the top 13 moving on.
Limestone-MSSM’s struggles continued. The Eagles lost three of their four games, falling to Southern Aroostook and Hodgdon in addition to the loss to Fort Fairfield. The lone win during the stretch came against Wisdom.
