BUSINESS MATTERS

Mission accomplished. After a round of golf Saturday morning, I drove around town and everything was packed as the city was full of vehicles for the City-Wide Yard Sale. Every eatery on Bennett Drive was full as well as those on Sweden Street. My neighbor down the street had constant traffic as did my neighbor up the street.
And the cars roamed around later than normal this year. It seemed traffic was heavy on Saturday right up until after five o’clock. And my neighbors had pretty steady traffic on Sunday too.

The one complaint was a shortage of maps. We printed 3,000 maps this year, a thousand more than last year, and everyone was out by Friday. There is a huge cost involved in printing the map and perhaps if we can get more advertisers next year, we can print a couple of thousand more.
I also drove by lots of folks piggybacking on their neighbors and having sales without signing up and getting signs from the Chamber. I know money is tight, but $15 is not a whole lot of money to sign up and is made back easily in the traffic brought to you by the Chamber’s efforts. To me, it just shows a lack of … well, … neighborliness and community spirit. But some people do what some people do.
The Memorial Day Parade comes up fast on the heels of the City-Wide Yard Sale and takes place on Monday of this coming weekend. So we need those who want to participate to register as soon as possible. The form is available on our website under Popular Forms or can be completed at our office. Let’s honor our heroes!
The parade starts at 10 a.m. and will run from the courthouse to the Veterans Memorial Park on the corner of Main and Lyndon streets. Lineup at the courthouse is at 9 a.m.
Also on Memorial Day at 1 p.m., a ceremony will take place at the Northern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery – Caribou. Jon Frederick is the guest speaker. The NMVCC always does a wonderful job of honoring our heroes.
We have a new map here at the office called the Ride Map and it is geared specifically for motorcycle riders. This map used to terminate at Bangor and after much haranguing; it was extended to include Aroostook County. I think we have the best motorcycle riding roads in the state, but I’m fairly sure that I am biased. If you love to ride, stop in and get this great map.
Along with the map, we also have copies of this year’s Ride Maine magazine that just came in.
June 4 is the date for the return of Thursdays on Sweden. The first week’s theme is, “Super Summer Kickoff,” as a new season of fun begins. The extremely popular French Toast will be performing and as always, there will be lots of food, vendors and fun for the kids.
    Have a great week everyone!
