The Caribou Vikings were looking to pull off the upset in their preliminary playoff baseball game last Wednesday in Dover-Foxcroft, but came up just short.
Caribou, which had grabbed the 13th and final playoff spot on the last day of the regular season, took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first and later scored twice in the seventh to force a 4-4 tie.
However, the Ponies’ Brooks Law hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to score Chandler Rockwell from third for the game-winning run in the 5-4 victory.
The Vikings’ seventh-inning rally started with the first two batters being retired, but then Dustin Bouchard singled, Michael Hunter doubled, Mason Huck followed with an RBI single to plate Bouchard and Hunter came across on a wild pitch.
Hunter ended up with three hits, while Dylan Conroy had a double and a single and Bouchard a pair of singles for Caribou, which ended up with a 6-11 overall record after winning the Eastern Maine Class B title a year earlier.
The Washburn baseball and softball teams both lost at home in the quarterfinal round Thursday. The fourth-seeded Beaver baseball team fell to No. 12 Schenck, 9-5, while the No. 2-ranked softball team was beaten by No. 7 Central Aroostook, 8-2.
The Fort Fairfield Tigers were also the home teams in baseball and softball games which had to be moved to Mars Hill because of poor field conditions in Fort Fairfield. The No. 7 Tiger baseball team fell short against 10th-ranked Penobscot Valley, 10-4, while the No. 4 FF girls came up two runs short against Highview Christian, 8-6.
