• Fishing parties are the rage with farmers who can now leave for a little recreation.
• There was quite an exciting runaway Saturday afternoon. George Washburn left his horse standing near S. L. White’s drug store, where it became frightened and ran up Vaughan Avenue to Sweden Street, where it was stopped near G.M. Morgan & Co.’s store.

Summer trains — The new summertime table on the Bangor & Aroostook will go into effect June 21 and will be appreciated by the traveling public. The trains will run about the same as last year. One of the changes which is being received with great joy is that there will be additional service between Ashland and Houlton.
Toward better spuds — We learn that S.E. Griffin [of Caribou], who is much interested in the seed improvement of Aroostook County and has for several years been growing many varieties of potatoes, besides propagating new varieties from the seed ball has this year, including his seedlings, planted 80 varieties. It is doubtful if there is a man in Aroostook County [who] can give you more information than Mr. Griffin.

Recital time — The pianoforte and violin pupils of Margaret P. Bailey will be presented in a recital at the Caribou High School Auditorium Friday evening, June 14, at 8 o’clock. No children will be admitted except those accompanied by their parents or guardians. Admission is free. The public is cordially invited to attend.
Shower surprise — Miss Helen Vincent, RN, and Mrs. Evelyn Pomroy Crockett were given a surprise miscellaneous shower by the Nurses Alumni Association during a meeting at the home of Mrs. Julia Gauvin, RN, of High Street. Miss Vincent, who is president, asked for the secretary’s report, who instead starting singing the “Wedding March,” and little Mary Hanley, dressed as a bride, and little Billy Raymond, as groom, presented each guest of honor with a card.

Friendly invasion — An “invasion” of 500 persons, firemen from Aroostook, New Brunswick and Quebec departments, their wives and friends was expected in Caribou this morning for the Annual Firemen’s Muster, being held here for the first time in 11 years. Chairing the event was Assistant Chief Albert Gahagan of the Caribou Fire Department.
Double the fun — Among Caribou High School’s record class of 235 graduating June 19 will be two sets of twins. Elwood and Peter Cook will both study electrical engineering at Lowell Technological Institute in Lowell, Mass. Rellan and Roland Monson plan to attend Wentworth Institute in Boston, with Rellan taking electrical engineering and Roland studying metals and engineering.

Summer project — Brescia Construction is at work beneath Bennett Drive as part of the company’s contract to install new water pipes and a storm drainage system under the busy avenue. The work, scheduled to continue into the summer, will culminate with above-ground improvements like new hot top,  curbing and sidewalks.
Going up! — Preparations are under way for this weekend’s second annual Crown of Maine Balloon Festival, taking place at Spruce Haven. Ten balloons have committed to be in Caribou for the three-day event, which is sponsored by the Association of Aroostook Chambers of Commerce.
