PERHAM, Maine — A former local town employee has been charged with stealing money from the town she worked for, according to Aroostook County Sheriff Darrell Crandall.
Connie Theriault, 40, of Caribou, has been charged with class B theft, and will appear in the Caribou District Court on Aug. 6.
On April 2, Perham town officials contacted the Sheriff’s Office to report their suspicions that Theriault had been stealing funds from the town. Theriault was a town clerk from 2012 until April 1, 2015.
Town officials reported to sheriff’s deputies that an auditor had reported areas of concern, which caused the town officials to dig deeper. Deputies reviewed hundreds of pages of documents in the possession of the town, as well as records obtained from financial institutions, and interviewed a number of witnesses before issuing Theriault a summons to appear in court.
The town, its auditors and sheriff’s deputies have identified over $39,000 that is unaccounted for. The case is now in the hands of the Aroostook County District Attorney.
Crandall said no additional details are being released at this time.
