CARIBOU, Maine — Last Tuesday, the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department hosted the County doubles tennis tournament at the Teague Park tennis courts for area youths between the ages of 8 and 18.
There were over 30 participants from Caribou, Fort Fairfield and Presque Isle. Players competed in 12 and under, 13-15, and 16-18 male/female age brackets by playing eight-game pro sets in all matches.
Teams earned two points for every first-place finish and one point for a runner-up in the County singles (held at the UMPI courts on July 21) and County doubles tournaments. Caribou took the lead after the singles event with 12 points while Presque Isle grabbed second place with four. At the end of the doubles tournament, Caribou added 10 more points and ended with a final point total of 22. Presque Isle grabbed five more points and finished in second place with nine points.
This was the 33rd consecutive year that Caribou has taken home the team title after the annual youth recreation department tennis tournaments.
In the 12-and-under girls’ division, two teams from Caribou made it to the finals. Livia and Ashlyn Bouchard defeated teammates Sage Dubay and Daryl Freeman, 8-1.
The 12-and-under boys’ bracket had four entries vying for the title. Sawyer Deprey and Brevin Barnes of Caribou cruised to an 8-0 victory over teammates Cory and Nick Freeman.
In the 13-15 girls’ division, teams from Caribou and Presque Isle reached the finals. Madison Stratton and Hailey Holmquist of Caribou outlasted Presque Isle’s Abby Quirino and Jenna Ouellette, 8-1.
The 13-15 boys’ bracket had only one team entered and Alec Cyr and Parker Deprey of Caribou won by default.
There was also only one team entered in the 16-18 girls’ division. Sarah Morneault and Hana Boucher of Presque Isle won by default. That was the case in the 16-18 boys’ bracket as Byron Winslow and Isaac Madore of Presque Isle won by default.
Other players from Caribou were Mia Theriault and Madelyn Deprey. Other players from Fort Fairfield were Jacqueline Pelletier, Brett Senal, Megan Schupbach, Joel Cormier, Colleen Schupbach, Alex Oakes, Josh Schupbach and Dixie Grady.
The victorious Caribou tennis team is coached by John Habeeb, Carlee Pinette, and Michael Marquis.
