ISLAND FALLS, Maine — A revised course led to some fast finishes Aug. 8 in the Island Falls Summerfest Pie Run 5K run/4K walk. A group of 46 runners and 30 walkers participated this year. In addition, a children’s half-mile fun run was also held, with four participants.
Jason Bigonia of Walpole was the overall winner of the 5K, with his time of 16 minutes and 40 seconds. Sharon Hathaway of Island Falls was the top female finisher (seventh overall) with a time of 19:12.
The walking winners were Heather Newman from Island Falls and Alan Chamberlain from West Point, Va., with times of 29:09 and 30:00 respectively.
“There were 80 participants this year for the 23nd annual Pie Run, with another big showing from Caribou,” said John Walker, one of the race organizers. “It was a sunny morning, but light rain fell by the end of the race forcing the auction inside. The course is very flat along a stream, out and back. This course is preferred by most all participants. The start/finish behind the ball field made for great spectator viewing and photography.
“As always, pies and other homemade desserts were awarded to all the winners,” Walker added. “Door prizes were also given out and many thanks to all the businesses who gave prizes or water.”
After the race, the remaining desserts were auctioned off.
“We were down a few pies this year, but another lively auction was held,” he said. “With no cherry pie going for $150 like last, the top (bid) this time was $100. Proceeds go to the local Agape Food Pantry, which assists about 90 families from the area.”
