115 Years Ago – 1900
– The Canadian Pacific are offering special low rates as inducements to visit the state Fairs, namely to the Eastern Maine State Fair at Bangor. Ticket agents at Caribou will issue on August 24 to 28 at a rate of $6.75 and on August 28 to 30 at a rate of $5.00. All tickets good to return until September 11.
– The selectmen of the town of Caribou have issued a call to the citizens of Caribou entitled by law to vote in town affairs for a special town meeting to be held in Clark’s hall, Tuesday afternoon, August 28, at two o’clock.
100 Years Ago – August 26, 1915
Horse overturn – Quite an excitement was caused one day last week when a horse belonging to Mr. Snowman ran away, over-turning the wagon, breaking it and then running home.
New Sign – George Cleary has placed a handsome and attractive new sign in front of his restaurant on Sweden street.
75 Years Ago – August 22, 1940
Potato shipments– Potato shipments on the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad from August 1, 1939 to July 31, 1940, fell off 1,213 cars from the previous season, a report just issued by the car service department. This was a 4 percent drop from the 1938-39 total of 28,950 cars.
Class of 1938 get together – The Caribou High School class of 1938 gathered for a reunion at Euclide Bouchard’s Cross Lake camp. Over 50 percent of the class members were present with their invited guests to enjoy outdoor sports and a social gathering.
50 Years Ago – August 26, 1965
Gym takes shape– Construction on the new Caribou High school on outer Sweden Street took another step forward as construction on the gymnasium portion of the school takes shape. The gymnasium is expected to have seating capacity for 3,000 spectators. The school is expected to open in the fall of 1966.
Sampson’s grocery prices – There is a sale going on at Sampson’s supermarket on High Street in Caribou. Grade A chicken breasts are 29 cents a pound (normally 59 cents), seven loaves of bread is on sale this week for 99 cents, half gallon of ice cream 39 cents, and ten jars of baby food just 88 cents.
25 Years Ago – August 22, 1990
St. Peter named manager of the year– Caribou City Manager Terry St. Peter received the Linc Stackpole Manager of the Year Award for 1990 from the Maine Town and City Management Association during its New England Management Institute held Thursday at the University of Maine at Orono.
New compactor for landfill– The Tri-Community Sanitary Landfill in Fort Fairfield took a new lease on life last week with delivery of a machine designated to save money by conserving increasingly precious acreage. The Bomag’s specialized “chopper wheels” are designed to tear garbage into smaller pieces, then mulch and compact it.
