Project Canopy, a cooperative partnership between the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s Maine Forest Service and GrowSmart Maine, announces grants are available to state, county and municipal governments, educational institutions and nonprofit organizations for community forestry efforts.
Projects support sustainable community forestry management and efforts to increase awareness of the benefits of trees and forests. Officials estimate $150,000 will be available, including $10,000 maximum awards in planning and education and $8,000 maximum funds for planting and maintenance.
Grant applicants must attend a workshop. These will be scheduled in November at various locations throughout the state. Grant applications are due Friday, Dec. 4, 2015. All grants require a 50 percent match in cash or in-kind services.
