Goal scoring has been an issue for the Caribou boys recently, yet the team continues to be in the hunt for a spot in the playoffs with just four matches remaining.
Caribou is 3-5-2 and in 11th place in Class B North. Crucial matches remain, beginning with tonight’s contest in Fort Kent. Old Town, Presque Isle and Madawaska are the remaining opponents.
The Vikes played Hermon to a scoreless draw last Tuesday on the road. This came on the heels of another 0-0 tie against John Bapst, played at CHS, three days earlier.
Once again, Ethan Plourde came up huge in goal for Caribou. The senior made 14 saves, including a diving stop with time running out in the second overtime to preserve the shutout. Viking coach Kyle Corrigan said it was Plourde’s best game of the season and that the defense also played well for the second consecutive contest.
At home Saturday, MDI dominated in the 5-0 victory. It was the second time Caribou was beaten by the Trojans this year and both were by the same margins. Zackarie Charrette scored twice and assisted on another goal to lead MDI.
Plourde shared goalkeeping chores with Caribou freshman Noah Hixon, with Plourde collecting 16 saves and Hixon three.
Meanwhile, the Viking girls managed to collect a major win over MDI Saturday, 2-1. After losing the first matchup Sept. 5 by a 2-0 score, Caribou bounced back behind Maddie Doucette, who tallied both goals in the home contest.
With her team trailing, Doucette converted a through ball from teammate Eileen Patton to tie it with 26:03 left in the first half. Nearly 19 minutes later, Doucette scored another goal, this one assisted by Amber Moir, to give Caribou the lead. Neither team was able to break through in the second half as the Vikings earned their sixth win, against four losses, and moved to sixth place in the Class B North rankings.
Caribou had fallen at Hermon Thursday, 4-1. Doucette scored the Vikes’ lone goal against the undefeated Hawks.
Like the boys, the Viking girls will take on Fort Kent at 5 p.m. this afternoon, with matches against Old Town, Presque Isle and Madawaska remaining.
The Limestone-MSSM boys have moved all the way to third place in the Class C North standings following a 4-0 win at Hodgdon Thursday. Ahmed Beshir scored a pair of goals, while Garrett Barb and Tobyn Blatt provided the others for the Eagles. Beshir, Alex Sprague and Nathan Gere picked up assists. Mathew Pelkey saved 11 of 12 shots to pick up his second shutout in goal.
Coach Jon Hamilton’s team trails only Central of East Corinth and Orono in the Heal Point standings.
The Eagle girls are now 2-7 and in last place in their division following a 5-3 loss to the Hawks Thursday. Lily Tedford scored two of the goals for Limestone-MSSM, with Francesca Armstrong adding the other.
