The Maine Sports Legends announces scholarship awards in the Northern Region to two recent graduates: Sarah Porter of Presque Isle High School and Jesse Stephens of Caribou High School.
Eight scholarships are awarded in the State of Maine, four girls and four boys who are outstanding in athletic ability, scholarship, leadership, character and community service. Both Porter and Stephens will receive a $500 scholarship at the start of their second semester in college.
They will both be honored at the 14th annual Maine Sports Legends Banquet in Waterville at the Alfond Youth Center on Oct. 11. Two of the eight state scholar/athletes will be chosen by the Maine Sports Legends Honors and Selection Committee and receive an additional $1,000 from Hofstra University basketball coach Tom Pecora in the name of the Maryann and James Beaudry Fund.
Sarah Porter is the daughter of Steve and Sue Porter of Presque Isle. While at Presque Isle High School, she was a member of the varsity soccer, varsity basketball and varsity tennis teams. As a senior, her soccer team won Eastern Maine Championship and along the way Porter set the school record for most career assists.

She received many Penobscot Valley Conference, Eastern Maine and state awards in all three varsity sports during her playing career.
Porter ranked first in her class of 147 students and also received the following honors: President’s Outstanding Academic Excellence Award for three years, Society of Women’s Engineering Award, and Top Scholar Merit Award from the University of Maine.
She is also in the National Honor Society, where she was student leader for their blood drive. Sh was a member of the PIHS Band and the Varsity Club.
Porter manages her church’s nursery every Sunday and also holds a part-time job. She has been accepted at the University of Maine at Orono Honors College.
Jesse Stephens is the son of Jamie Stephens and Katherine Martin-Stephens. Stephens participated in varsity cross country, varsity nordic skiing and varsity track and field with the Vikings. In nordic skiing, his team was PVC and Eastern Maine champion. Individually, he won the freestyle race at the state ski championships.

Stephens was also a key member of Caribou’s Eastern Maine Champion cross country team. He ranked first in his class of 122 students and also earned the honors of outstanding math and French student and highest honors all semesters in high school. Stephens was president of Student Council and was on the Executive Council of the National Honor Society. He was a member of the school’s chorus, as well as the theater program.
Stephens is on the State Catholic Youth Ministry Board and designed graphics for the local youth ministry shirt, is a member of the Christian Life Center Planning Board and works on Habitat for Humanity.
He has been accepted at the University of Maine at Orono’s College of Engineering.
