The five-time defending Class D girls’ state champion Washburn Beavers make the trip to Hodgdon to take on the Hawks as the regular season opens Friday for high school basketball teams throughout the state. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Also in action Friday are coach Logan McLaughlin’s Fort Fairfield Tiger boys, who reached the Class D state finals last year in his first season at the helm. Fort Fairfield is on the road to meet up against Limestone/MSSM, under first-year coach Brian Massey, at 7 p.m., following the girls’ game between the two schools located just 10 miles apart that tips off at 5:30 p.m.

Saturday’s schedule features a Class B matchup in the Big East Conference between Caribou and John Bapst at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, which will host its third regional tournament in February 2016. The girls’ game is at 1:30 p.m. and the boys’ game at 4:30 p.m.

On Monday, the Limestone/MSSM squads travel to Ashland for a doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The Washburn boys will play their first contest Tuesday, traveling to Hodgdon for a 7 p.m. scheduled tip.

The Caribou Vikings’ wrestling team, under head coach Chico Hernandez, will host eight other schools for a meet on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. Scheduled to make the trip north are Dexter, Washington Academy of East Machias, PVHS of Howland, Calais, Bucksport, PCHS of Guilford, Mattanawcook of Lincoln and Woodland.

Caribou has the only wrestling team in Aroostook County and the meet is one of only two being held at CHS this season, with the other set for Jan. 23, 2016.

Also taking place Saturday in Presque Isle is a swim meet featuring the newly-formed Carlisle co-op team, made up of athletes from Caribou, Limestone/MSSM and Presque Isle, against Washington Academy of East Machias. The meet gets under way at 1 p.m. at UMPI’s Gentile Hall pool.
