Lively trotting — Quite a number of fast horses were doing lively trotting on Sweden Street Saturday afternoon.
New pump — Superintendent Haynes, of the Caribou Water and Electric Light Co., has just received a hydrant pump. By using the pump every few days, water that accumulates between the frost jacket of the hydrant and the pipe proper is removed and there is no danger of the hydrants freezing during extremely cold weather.
Robin sighting — A robin was observed one day last week. It is unknown whether the bird intended to migrate south when the rest of its kind left some weeks ago.
New mill — A big mill is being built between the Madawaska Stream and railroad bridges in New Sweden by the partnership firm of John Yerza of Smyrna and Ed Perry of Northeast Harbor. Twenty-five men will work at the mill, with twenty-five additional men in the woods cutting lumber.
On the seasonal increase — Aroostook County’s record of automobile fatalities for the month of November took a more unfavorable trend compared with last month’s standing when the county percentage was dropped from the decrease column. The county record to date lists 19 fatalities for the first eleven months of 1940. This is the same number as reported for the previous year during a similar period.
Sub zero weather — Tuesday night was one of the coldest nights experienced so early in the season for a number of years; 38 degrees below zero was reported from the Main St. Bridge. Sweden Street hit 34 below and others ranged up and down the scale.

New lights — A proposal for lighting the recreation area at Teague Park has been presented to the Town Council by Allan Cousins and has been favorably received. The town’s initial cost for the lights is somewhere near the $6,100 range and would get its return over a period of years by selling the necessary to the community.
Same Zip — Effective January 15, Limestone and Loring will share the same zip code number, 04750, due in part by a nationwide program to streamline the zip code system, according to postmaster Alvin G. Spicer.
25 Years Ago — Dec. 5, 1990
Early snowfall — A 10-inch snowfall cancelled schools on Tuesday and caused treacherous driving conditions throughout the region. According to National Weather Service meteorologist Todd Shaw of the Caribou office, most of the accumulation in the central Aroostook County ended at 12 noon, but sleet and rain continued at that point. With yesterday’s storm, 22.2 inches of snow has already fallen this winter.
New Sears store — Sears, Roebuck and Co. announced plans Friday to open a new retail store as part of the enclosed Aroostook Centre Mall on U.S. Route 1 at the north end of Presque Isle. Scheduled to open in the summer of 1992, the 79,300 square foot department store will replace the present 43-year-old Sears store at 320 Main Street in Presque Isle.
