CARIBOU, Maine — The city of Caribou is holding a winter decorating contest, in which residents are eligible to win cash prizes for having the best decorated home.

Caribou residents with a creative flair are urged to pick up a form at the Caribou Recreation Department and turn it in before Dec. 16.

Contestants can choose one of three categories: traditional, nontraditional or business. The traditional category focuses on classic or Victorian-themed decorations such as sleds, white lights and greenery around the home. Nontraditional decorations allow contestants to be a little more creative and to think outside of the box, including such things as flashing lights, moving decorations, sounds or music. The business category pertains to any decorations at a Caribou business.

Contest participants can also write that they are not sure which category they belong to, at which point the judges will decide.

It costs $5 for citizens to enter the contest. All categories will be judged on creativity, effort, design, originality, visual appeal and imagination.

Judging will take place between Dec. 16-20. Judges will drive around Caribou at night to ensure that the lights are visible and also post photos of the homes to their Facebook page and allow people to vote by how many people “like” certain pictures.

First prize winners receive $100, second place gets $50, and pictures with the most Facebook likes are awarded $25.

The contest is sponsored by RE/MAX Central, Mavor Optical Family Eyecare, Mockler Funeral Home and Aroostook Limousines.
