Caribou matmen beat Dexter for first time in several seasons

Viking wrestling team improves to 5-1 overall

The Vikes recorded a rare wrestling dual meet win over Class C power Dexter and defeated two other teams in a meet held last Wednesday in Lincoln.

Caribou bested the Tigers, 41-26, marking the first time stopping them in six seasons. Dexter is the defending state runners-up.

The Vikings improved to 5-1 in dual meets as they also had victories over Bucksport (56-13) and host Mattanawcook Academy (72-6).

Axios Gerakaris and Trevonte Caudill were both undefeated on the evening, while Devin Roy garnered his first varsity win. Dustin DeMerchant, Marcus Caudill, Cory Jandreau and Colton Conley were others who turned in strong performances.

At the PVHS Christmas Tournament held Saturday, Caudill took the title in the 138 lbs. division for his fifth tourney victory of the season. Caudill stopped R. J. Nelson of Foxcroft Academy in the finals, 3-2.

Evan Michaud captured the bronze medal, while Izaiah Thayer and Colton Conley both placed fourth and Roy picked up a win.

The team was shorthanded as coach James “Chico” Hernandez said two of his competitors were academically ineligible and seven others were disqualified for not making weight.

“It was a tough day but we have to get ready for the next one,” he said.

Caribou is at Washington Academy in East Machias today for matches against the Raiders, Foxcroft Academy and Ellsworth. Saturday, the Vikings will compete in the Mid-Maine Tournament at Mt. View High School in Thorndike.
