The Caribou girls’ basketball team is in the win column after having dropped its first two contests.
The Vikings were able to pull out a 55-53 victory on Saturday to keep Old Town winless on the season. Caribou trailed by 10 points after the first quarter, but worked its way back thanks to improved shot selection and great defense.
“I was really impressed with how we didn’t just pack it in [after being down early],” said Caribou coach Ryan Deprey. “We rotated Ashley Matlock, Hope Shea and Danielle Hanson in our man-to-man defense against their two best players (Brooke Mishou and Makayla Richards) and those three sophomores did a great job.”
Searra Herbert, another sophomore who missed most of last season with a knee injury, tossed in 16 points to lead the Viking offense. Sophomore Gabrielle Marquis, junior Maddie Doucette and senior Jenna Boucher contributed nine apiece for the victors.
Mishout hit four three-pointers and totaled 23 points for the 0-5 Coyotes.
“Class B North is tough from top to bottom, so it’s nice to get an early win going forward,” Deprey said. “I’m really happy for the girls.”
The Caribou boys were handled easily later that afternoon by Old Town, The Coyotes broke out to a 21-8 lead after the opening eight minutes and put the game away by also scoring the first nine points of the second quarter.
Andre Miller and Chad Bartlett netted 21 and 17 points, respectively, for Old Town. Nick Allen had a career-high 12 and Dayne Savage chipped in with 10 for the 1-2 Vikings.
The Caribou girls were in Houlton Tuesday and the boys take on the winless Shiretowners tonight, also in Houlton.
It was a quiet week for the Limestone Community School/Maine School of Science and Mathematics teams, who played just once and don’t resume until after the new year.
The Eagle girls prevailed for the first time after losing their first five games. They downed Van Buren at home last Wednesday, 56-14, behind a huge statistical outing for Jessica Lindsay. The 5-9 senior scored 22 points to go along with 31 rebounds. She had help from frontcourt mate Maddie Williams, who had 21 points and 11 boards.
The boys’ team from Limestone is now 2-4 after falling to the Crusaders, 36-26. Joseph Conwell had a game-high 15 points for Van Buren, while Alex Sprague led the Eagle offense with 13.
The Fort Fairfield Tiger boys pulled off a big win Monday. Carter Bruce hit five three-pointers to finish with 17 points, Isaac Cyr notched 16 and the FF defense limited Southern Aroostook star guard Jackson Mathers to two field goals and a total of eight points in a 57-45 home victory.
Colin Goshorn and Chris Giberson netted 10 points each for the Tigers, who improved to 2-3. Fort Fairfield had lost to Fort Kent and Easton by three points in each game Thursday and Friday. The loss to the Bears came in overtime.
The Fort Fairfield girls were surprised by Katahdin on the road Monday, losing 57-49. It was the first loss for the Tigers after they opened with five consecutive victories. Georgia Landry fired in 17 points, Molly Cunningham had 16 and Courtney Stevens 15 for the 3-3 Cougars. Taylor Churchill fired in 23 points for FF.
The Tigers had rolled to wins over Fort Kent and Easton last week.
The Washburn girls were handed their first loss of the season at home last Wednesday to Southern Aroostook. The loss broke the Beavers’ 40-game winning streak. The youthful Warriors team, which has a roster comprised of only freshmen and eighth-graders, are now 4-1 on the year and atop the Class D North standings. Kassidy Mathers and Sydney Brewer scored 21 points each in the win.
Emilia Churchill had 25 points and Laina Mette 15 for the Beavers.
On Friday, Washburn (3-1) earned a 26-23 win at home over Wisdom. Churchill scored just two points, but Mette had a career-best 22 to key the offense.
The Beaver boys split their two games last week, using Jarrett Olson’s buzzer-beating three-point field goal taken from just inside the halfcourt stripe to defeat Southern Aroostook, 69-66.
Derek Baker nailed six three-pointers en route to a 22-point night for the Beavers. Olson had 20 points to go along with 10 rebounds and five assists, while Noah Caron had 11 points, six rebounds and six assists. Mathers and Nolan Altvater each scored 22 for the Warriors. Mathers’ three-pointer with five seconds left had tied the score before Olson’s heroics.
In Friday’s game against the Pioneers, 12 different Beaver players scored in the 75-34 rout. Brandon Cropley’s 16 points were tops for Washburn, which is now 4-1 on the campaign.
