NEW SWEDEN, Maine — Young students at New Sweden school recently participated in “Hour of Code,” a global movement reaching tens of millions of students and over 100 countries around the world.
An Hour of Code event can be organized anywhere. While the event is a celebration of Computer Science Education Week, Dec. 7-13, 2015 of this year, it does not need to take place during a specific time of day.
According to the organization’s website, the “Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics.” Computer science, organizers say, is important for students, as it “helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity,” and that students who start the program at an early age will “have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path.”
“My middle school class worked with some of the younger classes to help them out,” said New Sweden Principal Laurie Spooner, “but they were completely hands-off. The younger students were the ones who participated and the older ones were just there to assist if they got lost.”
