Grippe epidemic — That one Caribou physician has already attended more than 60 cases of grippe, or the flu, in Caribou.
100 Years Ago — Jan. 27, 1916
Early summer plans — It has been already announced that Fort Fairfield will celebrate July 4 this year. Caribou had the celebration in 1914 and Presque Isle in 1915. Plans are already underway in our sister town for the biggest celebration ever known there.
New issue — The Arcturus, the student newspaper issued by the Caribou High school, was printed this week and is a most creditable number indeed. The magazine contains many interesting and well written articles, and is embellished with three half-tone cuts (illustrations).
75 Years Ago — Jan. 23, 1941
Drug store sold — Sale of the C.C. Gammon drug store, Caribou was made Tuesday, Jan. 21 to Stewart Salter of Presque Isle. Charles C. Gammon, former proprietor of the store has been a well known Aroostook druggist for the past 30 years. Salter owns drug stores in Presque Isle and Houlton.
Candidates selected — Miss Margaret Thompson, Class of 1941, and Miss Helen Phair, ‘42, have been selected by the Limestone High School students as Winter Carnival Queen candidates for the 13th annual Winter Carnival Ball at the High school gymnasium Friday evening. The coronation ceremonies will play for the carnival dance, which is scheduled to start at 9 p.m.
50 Years Ago — Jan. 27, 1966
Sears opening — A “grand opening” sale began at Sears’ new sales and catalog store in the Caribou Shopping Center on the Access Highway. The new store, adjacent to Golding’s IGA, had its formal opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and throngs of customers were on hand throughout the morning to take advantage of the many sale items offered.
Need for pupils — More students are needed for the typing classes in the evening adult education program at Caribou High School, according to Guidance Director Brett Pratt. According to Pratt, there are too many candidates for one class and too few for two. He said the typing classes embrace both beginning and “brush up” courses.
25 Years Ago — Jan. 23, 1991
Keeping court — Gov. John R. McKernan’s proposal to close three district courts in central and northern Aroostook County was defeated last week in legislative committee. The court closure would have meant an income loss of $12,900 with an estimated $80,000 in savings from the judicial department through June 30.
Prayers for the troops — About 70 members of a local service organization, individuals and state representatives of Maine’s government delegation attended a Monday morning prayer service at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Caribou in support of the military men and women serving in Operation Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf. The service, officiated by the Rev. Rene Mathieu, church pastor, was organized by members of Lister Knowlton VFW Post 9389 of Caribou.
