BANGOR — The Caribou Vikings fell just short of qualifying for the Feb. 6 state championships in Class B, while Fort Fairfield was able to get there in the ‘D’ ranks.
Caribou placed seventh out of 14 teams at Saturday’s Class B North Regional held at the Cross Insurance Center, posting 58.6 points on the day. Old Town, with 76.4, edged Hermon by a point to grab the title. Ellsworth was 1/10th of a point behind Hermon to take third, while John Bapst (66.7), Presque Isle (66.7) and Mt. View (59.3) were next and the other qualifiers for the state event.
The Vikings were just 7/10th of a point out of the top six, ahead of MDI, Erskine, Gardiner, Foxcroft Academy, Winslow, Waterville and Nokomis.
On Monday, Jan. 18, Caribou participated in the Penobscot Valley Conference championship held at Stearns High School in Millinocket and came in fifth out of eight teams with 57.1 points. Old Town once again was the winner, posting 77.6; ahead of Hermon, Ellsworth and PI.
John Bapst, Foxcroft and MDI rounded out the field of competitors.
Caribou team members are Irene Thibodeau, Johnna Grant, Kirsten Haney, Julia Harris, Heather LaMothe, Kara Madore, Margeaux Beaulieu, Sheridan Blackstone, Makenzie Conroy, Adrieanna Damboise, Mickayla Ellis, Paige Obar, Crissy Corbin, Erin Jandreau, Molly McCrossin, Marisa Michaud and Katie Tardif. Brandi Makepeace-Cote is the coach.
The Fort Fairfield Tigers extended their season on Saturday by taking sixth place in the Class D North regional. The Tigers scored 44.5 points to finish behind champion Central Aroostook (67.4), Penobscot Valley (62.6), Machias and Bangor Christian (56.3 each) and Deer Isle-Stonington (45.7).
FF outscored Buckfield (44.5), Rangeley (43.3), Hodgdon (40.4) and Woodland (27.8) to earn a trip to the state finals two weekends away.
Fort Fairfield’s squad is made up of Meghan Everett, Makaila Flanagan, Kailanny Hernandez, Stephanie Parady, Alyssa Poitras, Jaydyn Fox, Gracie Griffeth, Julian McKenney, Emily Everett, Dixie Grady and Marissa Greene and is coached by Rachel Emery.
