Joseph Roland Cyr

     American Flag ColorHALLOWELL — Joseph Roland Donat Cyr, 86, of Winthrop Street, and formerly of Caribou, ME, died January 22, 2016 at the VA Togus Springs, Augusta, after a long illness.  He was born at home in Keegan on November 13, 1929, one of 11 children of Donat Cyr and Yvonne (St. Amand) Cyr.

     Mr. Cyr served honorably as an Airman First Class in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Prior to his retirement in 1993, he was employed as display manager at the J C Penney Department Store in Caribou for 34 years.

     Mr. Cyr was a devout Catholic and very proud of his Acadian history. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallowell and formerly a longtime member of Holy Rosary Church in Caribou, where he served as an usher and Eucharistic Minister and served on the parish council and school board.  He was very active in his community, a member of the 4th degree Knights of Columbus and American Legion in Van Buren, and the USO in Caribou.

     Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Therese (Theriault) Cyr of Hallowell, ME; three children: Marie and her husband Peter Beaulieu of Hallowell, ME, Michael Paul Cyr and partner Steven Hawthorn of New Gloucester, ME and Louise and her husband Terry Handy of West Gardiner, ME; one brother, Donald Cyr of South Carolina; one sister, Yvonne “PeeWee” Wall of Williamsburg, VA; four grandchildren: Marisa Beaulieu Nadeau, Nick Beaulieu, Sarah Handy and Jacob Handy; three great-grandsons: James, Jackson and Joshua (sons of Marisa),  and several nieces and nephews.

     There will be no public visiting hours.  A memorial Mass has been tentatively scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday Feb. 6 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 12 Summer St., Hallowell, ME.  Burial with military honors has been tentatively scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday Feb. 8 at the niches at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta, ME.  Please check the funeral home website www.plummerfh.com or call toll free 1-877-622-9311 for any updates.
