CARIBOU, Maine — Peter Kelley, who starred for the Viking basketball team in the 1950s, was honored and recognized for his outstanding athletic accomplishments prior to Wednesday’s varsity boys’ basketball game against Presque Isle.
Kelley, who practices law in Caribou, was inducted into both the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame and the New England Basketball Hall of Fame last summer. He is also a 1997 inductee into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.
Kelley played three years at CHS before spending his senior year at Phillips Exeter Academy. With the Vikings, he averaged 24 points per game as a freshman, 27 ppg as a sophomore and 28 ppg as a junior. He led the Vikes to an Eastern Maine championship in 1958 and was an All-Maine first team selection in both 1957 and ‘58.
Combined with his time at Phillips Exeter, he scored over 2,200 points during his high school basketball career.
Kelley went on to play at Harvard University, where he was an All-Ivy League choice his junior and senior years.
