Local girl captures state foul shooting title

BANGOR, Maine — At the Elks’ State Hoop Shoot foul shooting competition held at the Bangor High School Jan. 31, 2016, Faith Sjoberg of Presque Isle captured the Alan W. Richard Award, which went to the champion female Hoop Shoot contestant in Maine.

In winning her division for 10- and 11-year-old girls, Sjoberg sank 22 of 25 foul shots attempted, which was the top score for all girls in the state competition. That score also happened to equal the top score for all the boys in the event.

As the champion, Sjoberg qualified for the New England Regional Hoop Shoot competition to be held in Portland March 19. She will be competing against the winners from all other New England states.

She is the daughter of Kevin and Susan Sjoberg of Presque Isle and the granddaughter of Carl and Sonja Sjoberg of Caribou. She is a sixth-grader attending Presque Isle Middle School.

Four others representing Presque Isle Elks Lodge 1954 also participated in the Jan. 31 state finals. They were Madalyn Johnson of Washburn, second in the 8-9 girls’ division; Colby Burlock of Mars Hill, second in the 8-9 boys’ division; Parker Deprey of Caribou, second in the 12-13 boys’ division; and Maddie Stratton of Caribou, third in the 12-13 girls’ division.
