Bath salt dealer gets three years in jail

BANGOR, Maine — A Woodland man who admitted last year to conspiring with others to obtain and distribute bath salts in Maine was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court to three years in federal prison.

Preston Brown Sr., 51, also was sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine.

Brown also is facing charges in Aroostook County related to his sale of bath salts and an alleged domestic violence incident in May 2015 at his home. He is due in District Court in Caribou on Thursday on the following charges: trafficking in scheduled drugs, robbery, aggravated assault and domestic violence assault.

Assistant District Attorney John Pluto said Monday afternoon in an email that he has not yet reached a plea agreement with Brown, who is expected to serve whatever state time might be imposed at the same time he is serving the federal sentence.

Brown waived indictment and pleaded guilty in federal court in September to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and to distribute bath salts between June 2012 and June 2014, according to court documents.

On multiple occasions, Brown ordered bath salts over the Internet from China for personal use and to sell to other conspirators, according to the prosecution’s version of events to which he pleaded guilty.

Brown faced up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine. He faces up to 30 years in state prison and a fine of up to $50,000 if convicted of robbery, the most serious of the state charges.
