FORT KENT, Maine — The Fort Kent Outdoor Center and the U.S. Biathlon Association will be hosting the upcoming U.S. Biathlon and North American Biathlon Championships as skiers complete their competitive season March 24 through 26, 2016 according to a press release.
Local athletes from Aroostook County taking part include Cody Johnson of Fort Kent and Brendan Cyr from Caribou. Both made the World Junior Team this year and competed in Romania, along with national team athletes that competed in the Sochi Olympics and Presque Isle last month during the World Cup event.
The championships are expecting to attract 78 to 80 athletes of all levels, from master skiers to those 13- to 14-year olds in their first competitions, according to the release.
Wednesday and Friday will see the competitors training, while official competitions will be held Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Training sessions with seasoned coaches on skiing and shooting techniques will be available during the training periods.
The schedule for the event is: Wednesday, March 23, official training 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; Thursday, March 24, 1 p.m. zero and 2 p.m. sprint competition; Friday, March 25, 9 a.m. zero and 10 a.m. pursuit competition; Saturday, March 26, 8 a.m. zero and 9 a.m. mass start competition.
This will be the Outdoor Center’s seventh time hosting the U.S. championship.
