Trafton Lake: No ATVs allowed

LIMESTONE, Maine — After weeks of discussion and debate, Limestone Selectpeople voted to ban all ATVs and golf carts on the Trafton Lake campground during their Wednesday, March 2 meeting.

According to Town Manager Fred Ventresco, these rules will take place as soon as the campground opens to the public this year.

“There was some debate about allowing golf carts,” said Ventresco, “but after a long debate we decided to ban them both.”

Limestone Parks and Recreation Director Bill Tucker adds that the decision to ban golf carts nearly resulted in a split vote.

“The reason we decided to ban golf carts is because they are considered an ATV when not on a golf course,” said Tucker.

Since there is no legal ATV entrance to the campground, the only way to bring them in would be to trail them behind another vehicle.

“Hopefully this is something the Selectpeople revisit,” added Tucker. “It’s not going to be a popular decision.”

In addition to changing the rules for ATVs, Selectpeople also voted to alter a rule that previously forbade children under 18 from visiting the campground unattended. The revised rule places responsibility for unattended children in the hands of their parents or guardians.
