Presque Isle sixth-grader wins Elks’ New England free throw title

Faith Sjoberg of Presque Isle was the winner of the New England Elks’ Hoop Shoot championship in the girls’ age 10-11 division at the regional competition held on Saturday, March 19 at Westbrook High School.

As the New England champion in her division, Sjoberg will next compete at the Elks Hoop Shoot National Finals in Chicago April 14-17.

The 11-year-old daughter of Kevin and Susan Sjoberg is a sixth-grade student at Presque Isle Middle School. She converted 21 of her 25 free throw attempts to defeat five other competitors from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

In order to achieve her title as the New England champion, she first won the Hoop Shoot competition at PIMS in December 2015, and then took first at the Presque Isle Elks Lodge 1954 competition at the University of Maine at Presque Isle Jan. 9. She went on to capture titles at both the Northern District finals Jan. 17 and the Elks Hoop Shoot state final Jan. 31, both taking place in Bangor.

Sjoberg placed third at the New Englands in the 8-9 age division in 2014 after winning the state title that year. She came in third place in the state as an 8-year-old in 2013 and was the state runner-up in the 10-11 division a year ago.
