Troy Heald, left, Caribou branch manager for FA Peabody Company, presents a $1,000 check to Harry Hafford of the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery. The donation will go toward a renovation project at the cemetery’s committal shelter.

Workers are in the process of retrofitting the current committal shelter to make it more protected from the weather. Work will include extending the roof to accommodate an extra 36 people, closing in the north side gable end, adding doors and light panels, and installing sliding glass on the east and west sides, which can be opened or closed depending on the weather.

The project will require in excess of $50,000 to complete and cemetery representatives say they are confident they will achieve their goal.

Troy Heald, Caribou branch manager for FA Peabody Company, stated, “It is a joy and a privilege to be a part of this project and what the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery Committee is doing. To have a part in honoring our veterans who gave so much of themselves in their willingness to serve and protect our great nation, both in times of peace and times of war, is an honor and something we at FA Peabody Company are proud to do.”

Headquartered in Houlton, the company has eight offices in northern and central Maine.

The cemetery is located off the Lombard Road in Caribou, and includes the Avenue of Flags, a POW/MIA Remembrance Park and Walls of Honor for each military service branch.
