CARIBOU, Maine — A potato house was destroyed by fire Monday night despite the efforts of firefighters from Caribou, Presque Isle and Limestone.
The fire, which was called in at about 8 p.m., spread quickly and the building at 43 Carroll St. is “basically a total loss,” Caribou Fire Captain Brian Lajoie said Tuesday.
No individuals were in the building at the time and no injuries were reported in fighting the fire.
“To my knowledge, there were no potatoes in the building,” said Lajoie, “just a few pieces of equipment.”
Firefighters spent several hours combating the blaze and were able to keep nearby structures from also catching fire.
The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation. Lajoie said he was unsure whether the potato house, owned by Bob Hallett, was insured.
