PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The 36th annual UMPI Spring Runoff 5K Road Race will be run this Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 10 a.m. from the campus of the University of Maine at Presque Isle, with walkers beginning at 9:30 a.m.
This year’s race marks the first fundraising effort of the year for the UMPI cross country and track and field programs. The Owls track team competed this past Saturday at Fitchburg State University against over 20 teams from throughout New England.
The Spring Runoff is the second of the County Challenge Series. The first was held in Houlton in February, with P.J. Gorneault and Grace Graham claiming the overall titles.
Course records for the 5K distance are held by Gabrielle (Cyr) Wheeler (18:46, established in 2012) and Curtis Wheeler (15:33, 2010).
Registration for the race begins at 7:45 a.m. in Wieden Gymnasium. Runners may compete in age-specific women’s and men’s categories as well as in a three-person relay division which will allow inexperienced and shorter distance racers to participate.
Results will be compiled and added to those from the Katahdin Trust Snow Run two months ago as part of the Aroostook Mûsterds Running Club’s racing series.
Following that initial race held in Houlton, current age group leaders are Teagan Ewings (14 and under), Graham and Isaiah Brown (15-18), Rachel Hudson and Trevor Levesque (19-29), Marie Beckum and Gorneault (30-39), Angela Ewings and Joe Ewings (40-40), Candy Nevers and Bruce Clark (50-59), Rusty Taylor (60-69), Jim Nesbitt (70-79) and Mary Harbison and David Harbison (walkers).
