Library lauds littlest readers

CARIBOU, Maine — The Caribou Public Library is pleased to announce the newest graduates of the Babies and Books program: Grayson Shola, James Dean, Evelyn Rose Page, and Melody Richardson.

Currently “Babies and Books” is maintained by Katherine Wilcox Bosse, youth services librarian. The program was first started in 2000 by the Friends of the Caribou Library, Cary Medical Center and former Children’s Librarian Jean Shaw. Its mission is to promote early literacy for babies from birth to age 1.

“Early interaction with books gives children a prime start with learning,” said Bosse.

When babies are born at Cary Medical Center, a welcome letter is placed in their gift bag from the library. Attached to the letters received are baby’s first library card and an invitation to the library’s year-round programs. When visiting the library for the first time children will receive their own board books, a literacy packet and the ability to be a library patron.

Once a child turns 1 year old, a book will be placed in the library in their honor, indicating they have participated in the Babies and Books program.

Bosse noted the library has seen an increase in young patron involvement.

“With programs like ‘Babies and Books’ being implemented we are encouraging the next generation of library users. The more positive experiences children have with literature and the library, the more apt they are to take part in further program offers at the library. We encourage all parents and caretakers to bring their little ones to the library.”
