Volunteers are crucial at HHPR

CARIBOU, Maine — Halfway Home Pet Rescue volunteer Phil Green of Limestone spends many hours weekly helping to clean and care for HHPR cats at the adoption center.

Green, one of more than 35 of the rescue’s helpers, recently spent several afternoons scrubbing the inside and outside exercise pens so the cats could enjoy the fresh air and sunshine in their protective outside kennel environment.

The HHPR board of directors acknowledged the efforts of these cat lovers in April during Volunteer Appreciation Month.

Norma Milton, HHPR executive director, said citizens from Caribou and surrounding communities faithfully volunteer a few hours each week at the adoption center and/or at the HHPR Second Chance Thrift Store.

“Without these valued helpers, the volunteer-based pet rescue would not be able to accomplish such a high quality of medical treatments for the pets,” she said. “An average of $200 and up to several hundred of dollars of medical care is provided to each pet according to its need, whether with illness or severe injury.”

The Second Chance Thrift Store has undergone recent renovations, and patrons are invited to browse the new and “nearly new” items filling the shelves.

“Prices are reasonable in the store, staffed by cat loving volunteers who are eager to help you find your best buys,” said Milton.

All are welcome to stop by the store or the rescue to see KitKat and several other cats enjoying the outside exercise pens. One of the residents has found a new home: Sonic left April 30, bound for an adoptive family in Portland.
