115 Years Ago — May 1, 1901
Down the river — S.W. Collins and Son have 110,000 railroad ties, 500,000 cedar and 100,000 spruce, in the boom on Beaver Brook, to be driven to Caribou as soon as the other drives have gone down the Aroostook River.
New clerk — Edgar Russ arrived from Reading, Mass., Thursday of last week and is now clerking in Hardison and Pelchier’s furniture store on Sweden Street.
100 Years Ago — May 4, 1916
Blossoms and snowflakes — The Fort Fairfield Review reports strawberry blossoms as having been found in that town on April 24, quite early for the season. Caribou was visited Saturday by a few scattering snowflakes. In Boston, the day before, they had a regular winter storm, some five or six inches of snow falling.
Pupil count — The school census of Caribou has been completed and shows 2,129 pupils of school age, a gain of 8 over the 1915 census.
75 Years Ago — May 1, 1941
First Lady to visit Bangor — A record-breaking crowd is expected to be on hand at the Bangor Auditorium, Tuesday evening, May 20, to hear Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt speaking on the subject of “Peace and the World Today,” Dr. H.I.H. Levine, Community Center director, announced today.
New luncheonette to open — In the location formerly occupied by the Shoe Outlet on Sweden Street, Caribou people will witness the opening this Saturday of an entirely new idea in fountain service. Under the proprietorship of Pius A. Sirois, the new store will show a 30-foot “Fountain and Super Structure” completely finished in leather.
50 Years Ago — May 4, 1966
Special meeting — A special town meeting has been called for May 16 where the hospital expansion funds request will be considered. A $1,000,000 expansion program was proposed for the Cary institution, Monday night when their board met in joint session with the town council. The possibility of a tri-town hospital for central Aroostook County has been discussed in detail in recent months, but it was indicated that Presque Isle was not interested in the proposal.
Fall opening date — The future bodes well for the Caribou Vikings, if one of the finest gymnasiums in the state means anything. Flooring in the gymnasium is being sanded by workmen currently and the school is scheduled to open in the fall.
25 Years Ago — May 1, 1991
Rehabilitation — The Caribou Learning Center will be getting a $313,500 update, funded by a Caribou Development Block Grant. Upgrades to the Learning Center include re-roofing the entire school complex, making improvements to the parking lot, adding handicapped accessibility and classrooms and making exterior renovations if funds permit. The job is expected to begin in June and be finished in November.
Stockholm top students — Principal Lee Judkins of the Stockholm Elementary School has announced the following eighth-grade honor parts. Peter Stephens has been named valedictorian, salutatorian is Jillian Richards and honor essayist is Michelle Gorneault.
