Track teams enjoy busy Saturday with solid placements

     The first local track and field meet this season is set for Friday afternoon at the Johnson Athletic Complex in Presque Isle. The competition will begin at 3:30 p.m., with Caribou, Fort Fairfield, Fort Kent, Houlton, LCS/MSSM and Washburn all expected to compete along with the host Wildcats.

     The Caribou Vikings made the trip to Mount Desert Island Saturday for their second meet of the season. The Caribou girls used some solid individual performances and their depth to defeat seven other teams and take the title, while the boys’ team placed second to the host Trojans in a field of nine squads.

     Sophomore JoJo Fields had a huge day for the Vikings. She had a time of 13.45 seconds to earn first place in the 100-meter dash. Fields also captured the long jump by clearing a height of 13 feet, 7 inches and was second in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.2 seconds.

     Event winner Emma Belyea, a junior, joined teammates Kendra Furber and Emily Austin in sweeping the top three positions in the 1,600-meter racewalk. Belyea came in with a time of 9:29.43, with Furber second in 9:52.8 and Austin third in 10:13.88.

     Sophomore Meagan Dube was able to score second-place finishes in both the 400-meter dash (1:09.88) and the 200-meter dash (30.37 seconds), while Eileen Patton won the pole vault by clearing 7 feet, 6 inches. She was also the runner-up in both the 300-meter hurdles, recording a time of 52.5 seconds, and the javelin, with a mark of 98 feet, 3 inches. Her high-scoring afternoon also included a third-place finish in the 100 hurdles in 18.21.

     Furber took second in the pole vault with a height of 6 feet, 6 inches, while Maria Espinosa of the Vikes was third in the event at 6 feet.

     Sarae Greenier came in second and Austin third in the 3,200-meter run. Greenier finished in 13:54.12, with Austin next in 14:15.45.

     Erin Kashian placed third in the discus with a mark of 83 feet, 2 inches. Madeline Gudde was third in the 800-meter run in 2:40.49 and Alexis Rodriguez took third in the 1,600-meter run in 6:05.24.

     Caribou’s best placement in a relay was in the 4×800 as the foursome of Maren Moir, Ashley Violette, Rachel Ring and Sam Fortin came in at 12:39.47 to grab runner-up honors.

     Top efforts for the Caribou boys included Apollo Grondin’s victory in the 110-meter hurdes in 19.21 seconds and a win by Elijah Verhoff in the 800-meter run. Verhoff came in at 2:11.29 to finish ahead of teammates Evan Michaud (2:18.09) and Chathu Karunasiri (2:18.9).

     Karunasiri and Evan Desmond were first and second, respectively, in the 3,200-meter run. Karunasiri won in 11:05.78 and Desmond followed in 11:06.16. Three other Vikes scored points in the distance event. Caribou’s Matt Caron led the way in the pole vault by clearing a height measuring 9 feet, 6 inches. Michaud came in third at 8 feet, 6 inches.

     Desmond led four Vikings who scored points in the 1,600-meter racewalk. Desmond placed second in 7:52.81. Karunasiri was second in the 1,600-meter run in 4:56.98.

     Richard Newland turned in a strong all-around performance. He came in third place in the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 2 inches and he also was third in the triple jump (35 feet, 4 inches) and fifth in the 400-meter dash (56.69 seconds). For throwing events, Brandon Manter took third in the discus (100 feet, 1 inch) and Nic Sleeper was fourth in the shot put (38 feet, 5-½ inches).

     The Vikings’ highest placement in a relay was in the 4×800. The team of Nic Alfaro, Caleb Hunter, Calvin Mokler and David Hunter was third in 10:02.44.

      Athletes from Fort Fairfield and Washburn competed at Foxcroft Academy Saturday afternoon. The Tiger girls compiled 50 points, good for sixth overall, and the Beavers managed six points.

     For boys, Fort Fairfield came in second place with 78, with Foxcroft taking the title with 184. Washburn had 33 to place sixth out of 12 teams.

     Local first-place finishers in the girls’ meet included Jaydyn Fox of Fort Fairfield in the 100-meter hurdles (18.55 seconds) and the triple jump (29 feet, 8 inches) and Marissa Brouette of FF in the pole vault (7 feet, 6 inches).

     Placing second in individual events were Lillian Ashby of FF in the long jump (13 feet, 8 inches) and the triple jump (28 feet, 9 inches).

     On the boys’ side, picking up individual victories were Jonah Daigle of Fort Fairfield in the 300-meter hurdles (44.22 seconds), Lance McKenney of FF in the 800-meter run (2:10.52) and Jovanni Tavares of Washburn in the javelin (138 feet, 11 inches).

     Claiming runner-up honors were Daigle in the 110-meter hurdles (17.35 seconds) and Colin Goshorn of FF in the 300-meter hurdles (46.41 seconds) and the discus (102 feet, 4 inches).

     Goshorn was also third in both the 110-meter hurdles (17.36 seconds) and the pole vault (10 feet).

     One local relay team also took second place on Saturday. Washburn’s 4×100 team of Taveras, Derek Baker, Noah Caron and Devon Maynard recorded a time of 50.45 seconds.
