Rethinking the chamber move

     To the editor:

Recently the Caribou Chamber of Commerce turned over all of its activities and money to the chamber of commerce in Presque Isle. Are you telling me that we didn’t have anyone in Caribou capable of running a chamber of commerce?

Let me first tell you what I think the chamber of commerce’s responsibilities are:

1. That the chamber of commerce as an organization coordinate activities that would be helpful to the businesses in Caribou.

2. That the chamber of commerce be able to solicit new businesses to relocate in Caribou.

3. That the chamber of commerce be able to encourage and help people to relocate in Caribou.

4. I feel that belonging to the chamber of commerce is a privilege and businesses should be encouraged to participate.

5. The chamber of commerce should be a dues-paying organization and that dues could be established based on their income or their net worth.

6. If the chamber of commerce and the historical society would get together, by the chamber of commerce being housed in the Caribou Historical Society building, it could be a win-win for both organizations.

7. We desperately need a chamber of commerce here in Caribou. If Limestone is able to have a chamber of commerce, we certainly can afford one.
